Special spelling rules

When the stem ends in -t, -d, -n, -m, add -e- before -st and -t endings (for ease of pronunciation):

Infinitiveduer/sie
arbeiten (to work)arbeitestarbeitet
reden (to talk)redestredet
öffnen (to open)öffnestöffnet

Stem-changing verbs (Vokalwechsel)

Some verbs change their stem vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms:

TypeInfinitiveduer/sie/es
e → ielesen (to read)liestliest
e → iesehen (to see)siehstsieht
e → igeben (to give)gibstgibt
a → äfahren (to drive)fährstfährt
a → äschlafen (to sleep)schläfstschläft
Warning Stem changes only affect du and er/sie/es — not ich, wir, ihr, sie.

The present tense covers…

German Präsens expresses both English present simple and present continuous:

  • Ich spiele Tennis. = I play tennis. / I am playing tennis.
  • Er liest ein Buch. = He reads a book. / He is reading a book.

Real world: daily routine

A German teenager describes their morning: „Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. Dann frühstücke ich und gehe zur Schule. Mein Bruder schläft immer länger." — all present tense, covering what is happening right now and habitual actions.

Real world: chatting about hobbies

„Was machst du gern?" (What do you like to do?) — „Ich spiele Fußball und höre Musik. Manchmal lese ich auch." — regular verb conjugations in everyday conversation. Note: lese has no stem change in ich form.

Real world: stem-change in action — public transport

A timetable announcement: „Der Zug fährt um 9:15 Uhr ab." (fahren a→ä in er form.) A passenger asks: „Wann fährt der nächste Bus?" / „Wann liest du den Fahrplan?" (lesen e→ie).

Tip

Important: German Präsens covers both English present simple and present continuous. „Er spielt Fußball" means both "He plays football" and "He is playing football." Context tells you which.
