What are modal verbs?

Modal verbs express ability, permission, necessity, desire or obligation. They are used with an infinitive at the end of the sentence:

Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German.) Sie muss jetzt gehen. (She must go now.)

Word order with modal verbs

The modal verb is in position 2; the infinitive goes to the end:

SubjectModal (pos. 2)MiddleInfinitive (end)
Ichkanngutschwimmen.
Ermussheutearbeiten.
Wirwollenmorgenins Kino gehen.

In negative sentences, nicht comes before the infinitive or at the end:

  • Ich kann nicht kommen. (I cannot come.)

Real world: public signs and rules

German public signs use modal verbs to express rules: „Sie müssen einen Ausweis vorzeigen." (You must show ID.) / „Hier darf man nicht rauchen." (Smoking not permitted here.) / „Fahrgäste dürfen das Fahrzeug erst betreten, wenn..." (Passengers may only board when...)

Real world: ordering at a café

At a café: „Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte." (I would like a coffee.) — the most polite way to order. „Können Sie mir die Speisekarte bringen?" (Can you bring me the menu?) — polite request using können.

Real world: school and workplace obligations

Teacher to pupils: „Ihr müsst heute einen Aufsatz schreiben." (You have to write an essay today.) / „Du sollst pünktlich sein." (You should be on time.) / „Kannst du mir helfen?" (Can you help me?) — all in everyday school and work life.

Tip

Quick guide: können = ability (can), müssen = obligation (must/have to), dürfen = permission (may/allowed to), wollen = desire (want to), sollen = instruction (supposed to), möchten = polite wish (would like to). Möchten is your best friend in shops and restaurants.
