Two tools for negation
German uses two main words to negate:
| Word | Used with | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nicht | verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns with a definite article | Ich komme nicht. |
| kein / keine | nouns with an indefinite article or no article | Ich habe kein Buch. |
nicht — negating verbs, adjectives, adverbs
General sentence negation (negates the whole verb): nicht comes at the end of the clause (or just before infinitives/past participles):
| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| Ich komme. | Ich komme nicht. |
| Er schläft. | Er schläft nicht. |
| Ich kann kommen. | Ich kann nicht kommen. |
| Sie hat geschlafen. | Sie hat nicht geschlafen. |
Negating a specific element (adjective, adverb, specific noun with der/die/das): nicht goes directly before the element:
| Positive | Specific negation |
|---|---|
| Das Buch ist interessant. | Das Buch ist nicht interessant. |
| Er geht heute. | Er geht nicht heute, sondern morgen. |
| Ich meine den Mann. (specific) | Ich meine nicht den Mann. |
kein / keine — negating nouns
Use kein to negate a noun that would otherwise use ein / eine or no article:
| Positive | Negative with kein |
|---|---|
| Ich habe ein Buch. | Ich habe kein Buch. |
| Er hat eine Schwester. | Er hat keine Schwester. |
| Ich trinke Kaffee. (no article) | Ich trinke keinen Kaffee. |
| Sie hat Zeit. (no article) | Sie hat keine Zeit. |
kein declines like ein:
| Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | kein | keine | kein | keine |
| Accusative | keinen | keine | kein | keine |
Nicht vs kein — quick rule
- Noun + definite article (der/die/das) → use nicht: Ich lese nicht das Buch.
- Noun + indefinite article (ein) or no article → use kein: Ich habe keinen Hund.
Real world: instruction manuals and product labels
German product warnings and washing instructions use nicht and kein throughout: „Nicht in der Spülmaschine waschen." (Do not wash in the dishwasher.) „Nicht in Reichweite von Kindern lassen." (Do not leave within reach of children.) „Kein Feuer." (No fire.) — official negation in everyday life.
Real world: declining invitations and saying no politely
In German social situations: „Ich kann leider nicht kommen." (I unfortunately cannot come.) „Ich habe keine Zeit." (I have no time.) „Das ist nicht mein Problem." (That is not my problem.) „Es gibt kein Brot mehr." (There is no more bread.) — polite negation in everyday speech.
Real world: correcting misunderstandings
When correcting someone: „Das ist nicht der Hauptbahnhof, sondern der Ostbahnhof." (That is not the main station, but the eastern station.) „Das Café schließt nicht um 5 Uhr, sondern um 6 Uhr." — nicht ... sondern is the standard German pattern for correction.
Quick guide: use kein when you would use ein/eine or no article (nouns). Use nicht for everything else — verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns with a definite article. When in doubt, try inserting ein before the noun: if ein fits, use kein; if not, use nicht.
