Er wird das Buch lesen. He will read the book.
Wir werden in die Schule gehen. We will go to school.
Du wirst spät ankommen. You will arrive late.
Tip

The infinitive always goes to the end of the sentence — just like with modal verbs.

When to Use Futur I

1. Future plans and events

Nächstes Jahr werde ich nach Berlin fahren. (Next year I will travel to Berlin.)

2. Predictions

Es wird morgen regnen. (It will rain tomorrow.)

3. Promises or intentions

Ich werde mehr üben! (I will practise more!)

4. Present tense is often used instead

In spoken German, the present tense often replaces Futur I when a time word makes the future clear:

  • Futur I: Ich werde morgen spielen.
  • Present: Ich spiele morgen. (I'm playing tomorrow.)

Both are correct. Futur I is more emphatic or formal.

Questions and Negation

  • Question: Wirst du kommen? (Will you come?)
  • Negation: Ich werde nicht kommen. (I will not come.)

Real world: weather forecasts

German weather reports use Futur I for predictions: „Morgen wird es regnen." (Tomorrow it will rain.) „Die Temperaturen werden auf 5 Grad fallen." (Temperatures will fall to 5 degrees.) „Es wird bewölkt sein." (It will be cloudy.) — werden + infinitive at the end, exactly as the rule states.

Real world: promises and resolutions

New Year's resolutions and promises use Futur I or its emphatic form: „Ich werde mehr Sport treiben!" (I will do more sport!) „Wir werden das schaffen!" (We will manage it!) „Du wirst sehen, dass ich recht habe." (You will see that I am right.) — motivational and resolute German language.

Real world: event announcements and schedules

Announcements and programme descriptions use Futur I: „Der Präsident wird morgen die Stadt besuchen." (The president will visit the city tomorrow.) „Das Konzert wird um 20:00 Uhr beginnen." (The concert will begin at 8 pm.) — formal announcements in newspapers and on websites.

Tip

In everyday spoken German, the present tense often replaces Futur I when a time word is present: „Ich spiele morgen Fußball." (I'm playing football tomorrow.) Futur I („Ich werde morgen Fußball spielen.") sounds more emphatic or formal. Both are grammatically correct.
