Yes/No Questions (Entscheidungsfragen)

Invert the subject and verb — the verb moves to position 1:

StatementYes/No Question
Du sprichst Deutsch.Sprichst du Deutsch?
Er lernt Mathe.Lernt er Mathe?
Sie können schwimmen.Können sie schwimmen?

Answer: Ja (Yes) or Nein (No).

W-Questions (Ergänzungsfragen)

W-questions start with a question word (W-Wort), followed by the verb in position 2, then the subject:

Question wordMeaningExample
Wer?Who? (subject)Wer kommt heute? (Who is coming today?)
Was?What? Was lernst du? (What are you learning?)
Wann? When?Wann beginnt der Unterricht? (When does class start?)
Wo?Where? (location)Wo wohnst du? (Where do you live?)
Wohin?Where to? (direction)Wohin gehst du? (Where are you going to?)
Woher?Where from?Woher kommst du? (Where are you from?)
Warum? Why?Warum lernst du Deutsch? (Why do you learn German?)
Wie?How?Wie heißt du? (What is your name?)
Wie viel? How much?Wie viel kostet das? (How much does that cost?)
Wie viele? How many?Wie viele Schüler sind in der Klasse?
Welcher/e/es?Which?Welches Buch liest du? (Which book are you reading?)

Structure of a W-question

W-word — Verb — Subject — Rest

W-wordVerbSubjectRest
Wannkommstdunach Hause?
WarumlernensieDeutsch?
Wieheißter?
Tip Wer? asks for the subject — no inversion needed: Wer spricht Deutsch? (Wer is already position 1, verb position 2, no separate subject needed.)

Polite questions with möchten

For polite requests, use möchten:

  • Möchtest du etwas trinken? (Would you like something to drink?)
  • Was möchten Sie bestellen? (What would you like to order?)

Real world: asking for directions as a tourist

A tourist in Germany needs several W-questions at once: „Entschuldigung, wo ist der Bahnhof?" (Where is the station?) „Wie weit ist es?" (How far is it?) „Wohin fährt dieser Bus?" (Where does this bus go?) — practical navigation using wo, wie weit and wohin from the W-question table.

Real world: customer service and job interviews

In a customer service call: „Was kann ich für Sie tun?" (What can I do for you?) „Wann ist Ihre Bestellung angekommen?" (When did your order arrive?) In a job interview: „Warum möchten Sie bei uns arbeiten?" (Why do you want to work here?) „Welche Erfahrungen haben Sie?" (What experience do you have?)

Real world: ordering in a café

A waiter's questions use polite möchten questions: „Was möchten Sie bestellen?" (What would you like to order?) „Möchten Sie Milch zum Kaffee?" (Would you like milk with your coffee?) — yes/no question (inversion) and W-question side by side in a real café conversation.

Tip

In German, question formation is very systematic: yes/no questions just move the verb to position 1. W-questions put the question word at position 1, verb at position 2. Once you learn this pattern, it works for every verb and every tense in the language.
