The Indefinite Article
English has one indefinite article (a / an). German has ein (masculine/neuter) and eine (feminine):
| Gender | Article | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | ein | ein Tisch (a table) |
| Feminine | eine | eine Schule (a school) |
| Neuter | ein | ein Kind (a child) |
| Plural | (none) | Kinder (children) |
Declension across cases
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | ein | eine | ein |
| Accusative | einen | eine | ein |
| Dative | einem | einer | einem |
kein — the negative article
kein / keine declines exactly like ein / eine and negates nouns:
| Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | kein | keine | kein | keine |
| Accusative | keinen | keine | kein | keine |
| Dative | keinem | keiner | keinem | keinen |
Use kein instead of nicht ein:
- Ich habe kein Buch. (I have no book / I don't have a book.)
- Er hat keine Schwester. (He has no sister.)
ein vs kein comparison
| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| Das ist ein Hund. | Das ist kein Hund. |
| Ich habe einen Bruder. | Ich habe keinen Bruder. |
| Sie hat eine Katze. | Sie hat keine Katze. |
Real world: first mention in conversation
When something is mentioned for the first time, use the indefinite article: „Ich sehe einen Hund." (I see a dog.) — then once it is known, switch to the definite: „Der Hund ist groß." This mirrors English exactly: "I saw a film. The film was great."
Real world: job interviews and introductions
When stating your profession or describing yourself: „Ich bin ein Lehrer." / „Sie ist eine Ärztin." — the indefinite article introduces the role. With kein: „Ich bin kein Student mehr." (I'm no longer a student.)
Real world: menus and advertisements
Restaurant menus and ads use the indefinite article when listing options: „Wir empfehlen einen frischen Salat." (We recommend a fresh salad.) / „Haben Sie einen Tisch für zwei?" (Do you have a table for two?) — einen because Tisch is masculine Accusative.
Key rule: Use ein/eine for something first-mentioned or non-specific, like English a/an. Use kein/keine to negate a noun with ein or a noun with no article — never use nicht ein, always kein.
