The five accusative prepositions

These prepositions always require the Accusative case. A helpful mnemonic: d-f-g-o-u or "dogs fart, geese often understand".

PrepositionMeaningExample
durchthroughEr geht durch den Park. (He walks through the park.)
fürforDas Geschenk ist für meinen Vater. (The gift is for my father.)
gegenagainst, around (time)Wir spielen gegen das andere Team. (We play against the other team.)
ohnewithoutIch gehe ohne meinen Bruder. (I go without my brother.)
umaround, at (time)Wir treffen uns um den Brunnen. / um 3 Uhr (We meet around the fountain. / at 3 o'clock)

Effect on articles

With Accusative, only the masculine forms change:

ArticleNominativeAccusative
Definite (m)derden
Indefinite (m)eineinen
Femininediedie (no change)
Neuterdasdas (no change)

Examples across genders

PrepositionMasculine Acc.Feminine Acc.Neuter Acc.
fürfür den Mannfür die Fraufür das Kind
ohneohne einen Hundohne eine Katzeohne ein Auto
durchdurch den Walddurch die Stadtdurch das Dorf

um — time expressions

um is very common in time expressions:

  • Der Unterricht beginnt um 8 Uhr. (Class starts at 8 o'clock.)
  • Ich gehe um Mitternacht schlafen. (I go to sleep at midnight.)

Real world: giving directions in a German city

Asking for directions involves accusative prepositions constantly: „Gehen Sie durch den Hauptbahnhof." (Go through the main station.) „Fahren Sie um den Stadtpark herum." (Drive around the city park.) „Das Café ist gegen das Ende der Straße." — real navigation language using durch, um and gegen.

Real world: gift-giving and greetings cards

German greetings cards and gift tags use für with the accusative: „Für meinen lieben Vater" (For my dear father — masculine Acc.), „Für dich!" (For you!), „Ein Geschenk für meine beste Freundin" (A gift for my best friend — feminine Acc.). The preposition für is one of the most common in everyday written German.

Real world: signs and schedules with um

Train timetables and public signs rely on um for time: „Abfahrt um 14:37 Uhr" (Departure at 14:37), „Der Unterricht beginnt um 8:00 Uhr" (Class starts at 8:00). Sports fixtures use gegen: „FC Bayern gegen Borussia Dortmund" (FC Bayern against Borussia Dortmund).

Tip

Remember the five accusative prepositions with the mnemonic durch – für – gegen – ohne – um. Only the masculine article changes: der → den / ein → einen. Feminine and neuter stay the same — so für die Frau and für das Kind look just like the Nominative.
