Key Terms

TermDefinition
Radius (rr)Distance from the centre to the edge
Diameter (dd)Distance across the circle through the centre; d=2rd = 2r
Circumference (CC)Distance all the way around the circle
Pi (π\pi)Approximately 3.14159… a fixed number linking diameter to circumference

The Formulae

Circumference of a Circle

C=πd=2πrC = \pi d = 2\pi r

C = circumference, d = diameter, r = radius, π ≈ 3.14159

Use C=πdC = \pi d when you know the diameter; use C=2πrC = 2\pi r when you know the radius.

Find the circumference — radius given

A circle has radius r=5r = 5 cm.

C=2×π×5=10π≈31.4 cmC = 2 \times \pi \times 5 = 10\pi \approx 31.4 \text{ cm}

Find the circumference — diameter given

A wheel has diameter d=0.6d = 0.6 m.

C=π×0.6≈1.88 mC = \pi \times 0.6 \approx 1.88 \text{ m}

In one full rotation, the wheel travels about 1.88 m.

Finding the Radius from the Circumference

Rearrange the formula:

r=C2πr = \frac{C}{2\pi}

Find the radius

A circle has circumference 50 cm.

r=502π=506.283≈7.96 cmr = \frac{50}{2\pi} = \frac{50}{6.283} \approx 7.96 \text{ cm}

Tip

When a question says "leave your answer in terms of π", do not multiply by 3.14159. Just write e.g. 10π10\pi cm.

Real world: bicycle wheel and speedometer

A bicycle wheel has diameter 70 cm (r=35r = 35 cm).

C=π×70≈220 cm=2.2 mC = \pi \times 70 \approx 220 \text{ cm} = 2.2 \text{ m}

Every full turn of the wheel the bike travels 2.2 m. Cycle computers count rotations and use this circumference to calculate speed and distance accurately — the same principle as a car speedometer.

Real world: athletics track lane distances

An athletics track has two semicircular bends with inner radius 36.5 m. Lane 1 circumference of each bend:

Cbend=π×36.5≈114.7 mC_{\text{bend}} = \pi \times 36.5 \approx 114.7 \text{ m}

Each outer lane adds about 2π×1.22≈7.72\pi \times 1.22 \approx 7.7 m per bend. This is why runners in outer lanes start further forward — a staggered start ensures everyone runs the same total distance.

Real world: measuring a circular pond border

A gardener wants to plant flowers around the edge of a circular pond with diameter 4.5 m.

C=π×4.5≈14.1 mC = \pi \times 4.5 \approx 14.1 \text{ m}

They need roughly 14.1 m of border edging. Knowing the circumference prevents buying too little or too much material.

Tip

Where do we use circumference? Measuring wheel travel, calculating track lane starts, sizing belts and chains, wrapping paper around cylinders, and fitting circular picture frames all rely on the circumference formula.

Practice Problems

Find the circumference of a circle with radius 8 cm. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.

Show answer
C = 2π × 8 = 16π ≈ 50.3 cm

A circular pond has diameter 12 m. What is its circumference?

Show answer
C = π × 12 = 12π ≈ 37.7 m

A circle has circumference 62.8 cm. Find its radius.

Show answer
r = 62.8 ÷ (2π) ≈ 62.8 ÷ 6.283 ≈ 10 cm
