Circle Definitions

A circle is the set of all points in a plane equidistant from a center point. The distance from the center to any point on the circle is the radius rr.

Circle with radius r
Circle with radius r

Area of a Circle

A=πr2A = \pi r^2

r is the radius of the circle.

Circumference of a Circle

C=2πr=πdC = 2\pi r = \pi d

The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference.

Circle with radius 5 cm

A=π×52=25π≈78.54 cm2A = \pi \times 5^2 = 25\pi \approx 78.54 \text{ cm}^2

C=2π×5=10π≈31.42 cmC = 2\pi \times 5 = 10\pi \approx 31.42 \text{ cm}

Tip

Leave answers in terms of π where possible for exactness. Use π≈3.14159\pi \approx 3.14159 for decimal approximations.

Real world: comparing pizza sizes

A small pizza has diameter 24 cm (r=12r = 12 cm) and a large has diameter 30 cm (r=15r = 15 cm).

Small: A=π×122=144π≈452 cm2A = \pi \times 12^2 = 144\pi \approx 452 \text{ cm}^2

Large: A=π×152=225π≈707 cm2A = \pi \times 15^2 = 225\pi \approx 707 \text{ cm}^2

The large pizza is about 57 % bigger than the small — despite looking only 25 % wider. Knowing circle areas helps you judge value for money.

Real world: garden sprinkler coverage

A rotating sprinkler reaches 5 m in every direction.

A=π×52=25π≈78.5 m2A = \pi \times 5^2 = 25\pi \approx 78.5 \text{ m}^2

A gardener uses this to decide how many sprinklers cover a 20 m × 10 m lawn (200 m²): at least 3 sprinklers with some overlap.

Real world: circular window glass

An architect designs a circular window with diameter 0.8 m (r=0.4r = 0.4 m).

A=π×0.42=0.16π≈0.50 m2A = \pi \times 0.4^2 = 0.16\pi \approx 0.50 \text{ m}^2

Glass is sold by the square metre. This tells the glazier exactly how much material to order and quote.

Tip

Where do we see circles? Coins, wheels, clock faces, manholes, pizzas, roundabouts, dartboards, plates, and porthole windows are all circular. Whenever you need the space inside or the distance around a circular object, these formulas apply.

Practice Problems

Find the area of a circle with radius 3 cm.

Show answer
A = π × 9 = 9π ≈ 28.27 cm²

A circle has circumference 20π cm. What is its radius?

Show answer
2πr = 20π → r = 10 cm

A circular swimming pool has diameter 8 m. What area of ground does it cover?

Show answer
r = 4 m. A = π × 16 = 16π ≈ 50.3 m²
