What are Arcs and Sectors?
- An arc is a curved part of the circumference of a circle.
- A sector is the "pie slice" region bounded by two radii and an arc.
The angle at the centre of the sector (called the central angle ) tells us what fraction of the full circle we have:
Arc Length Formula
Arc Length
θ = central angle in degrees, r = radius
Find the arc length
A sector has radius 10 cm and central angle 72°.
Sector Area Formula
Sector Area
θ = central angle in degrees, r = radius
Find the sector area
Same sector: radius 10 cm, angle 72°.
Finding the Angle from the Arc
If you know the arc length and radius, rearrange to find :
A semicircle is a sector with . Its arc is exactly half the circumference.
Real world: windscreen wiper sweep area
A car's windscreen wiper blade is 55 cm long. It sweeps through an angle of 120°. What area does it clear?
Engineers use this calculation when designing windscreens to ensure the wiper clears enough of the driver's field of view.
Real world: clock hands sweeping a sector
A clock's minute hand is 12 cm long. In 20 minutes it sweeps through .

Real world: pizza slice
A pizza has radius 15 cm and is cut into 8 equal slices (each subtends ).
Arc of crust per slice:
Area of each slice:
Where do sectors appear? Windscreen wiper coverage, clock hands, pizza slices, pie chart segments, irrigation pivots, and stadium seating plans all involve sectors or arcs.
