Why Area Matters

Area measures the amount of surface inside a shape. It is measured in square units (cm², m², etc.).

Rectangles and Squares

Rectangle

A=l×wA = l \times w

length × width

Square

A=s2A = s^2

side length squared

Floor tiles: 4 m × 3 m room

A=4×3=12 m2A = 4 \times 3 = 12 \text{ m}^2

If tiles are 0.5×0.5 m0.5 \times 0.5 \text{ m}, you need 12÷0.25=4812 \div 0.25 = 48 tiles.

Triangles

Triangle

A=12bhA = \frac{1}{2} b h

half base times height

  1. 1

    Identify the base and height

    The height must be perpendicular to the chosen base.

  2. 2

    Apply the formula

    A=12×b×hA = \frac{1}{2} \times b \times h

Circles

Circle

A=πr2A = \pi r^2

π times radius squared

A circular garden with diameter 10 m

r=5 mr = 5 \text{ m}, A=π×25≈78.5 m2A = \pi \times 25 \approx 78.5 \text{ m}^2

Tip

When given the diameter, always halve it to get the radius first!

Real world: flooring a room

A living room measures 5.5 m × 4 m. Area =5.5×4=22 m2= 5.5 \times 4 = 22\text{ m}^2. Flooring is sold in packs covering 2.5 m² each, so ⌈22÷2.5⌉=9\lceil 22 \div 2.5 \rceil = 9 packs are needed. Area calculations prevent under- or over-ordering materials.

Real world: painting a circular mural

An artist is commissioned to paint a circular mural of diameter 6 m. r=3 mr = 3\text{ m}, A=π×9≈28.3 m2A = \pi \times 9 \approx 28.3\text{ m}^2. Each tin of specialist paint covers 5 m², so ⌈28.3÷5⌉=6\lceil 28.3 \div 5 \rceil = 6 tins are needed. Knowing the area saves the artist time and money.

Real world: turf for a football pitch

A five-a-side pitch is 45 m × 30 m. Area =45×30=1350 m2= 45 \times 30 = 1350\text{ m}^2. Rolls of artificial turf are 4 m wide and 25 m long (=100 m2= 100\text{ m}^2 each), so ⌈1350÷100⌉=14\lceil 1350 \div 100 \rceil = 14 rolls are required. Ground staff use area to budget accurately.

Tip Area is always in square units. A common mistake is to give an area in cm instead of cm². Double-check your unit after every area calculation.

Practice Problems

Find the area of a triangle with base 8 cm and height 5 cm.

Show answer
A = ½ × 8 × 5 = 20 cm²

A circle has radius 7 m. Find its area.

Show answer
A = 49π ≈ 153.9 m²

A square has area 64 m². Find the side length.

Show answer
s = √64 = 8 m
