Useful Date Phrases

Heute ist der erste März.Today is the first of March.

Ordinal numbers (first, second…) in dates: add -te (1st–19th) or -ste (20th+) to the number, then decline like an adjective.

Dates in German

  • Heute ist der 15. Februar. (spoken: der fĂźnfzehnte Februar)
  • Mein Geburtstag ist am 3. April. (spoken: am dritten April)

Real world: German birthday and event invitations

German invitations always use month names: „Das Fest findet am Samstag, den fünfzehnten März statt." „Mein Geburtstag ist am zehnten November." „Wann hast du Geburtstag? — Im Juli!" — every event card, text message, and school calendar uses months with the preposition im or dates with am.

Real world: describing the seasons in German

Describing seasonal activities is a classic conversation topic: „Im Sommer fahre ich ans Meer." „Im Winter schneit es oft." „Im Frühling blühen die Blumen." „Im Herbst werden die Blätter bunt." — all four seasons are masculine and take im (= in dem).

Tip

German months and seasons all use im (= in + dem): im Januar, im Sommer. For days of the week and specific dates use am (= an + dem): am Montag, am dritten März. One quick rule: im = months and seasons; am = days and dates.
