Real world: getting ready for school

Every morning involves packing school supplies: „Hast du dein Mäppchen?" „Ich brauche meinen Taschenrechner für Mathe." „Vergiss den Rucksack nicht!" — these practical exchanges happen in every German household on school mornings.

Real world: finding your way around the school building

When navigating a German school: „Wo ist die Bibliothek?" „Das Labor ist im dritten Stock." „Wir treffen uns in der Kantine." — knowing the names of school rooms makes it easy to follow instructions from teachers and staff in any German school.

Tip

German school supplies often come up in the accusative case: Ich brauche einen Stift (masculine, acc.) / ein Heft (neuter, acc.) / eine Schere (feminine, acc.). Practise by reading your own school bag's contents out loud in German.
