Forming ordinal numbers
1st–19th: add -t to the cardinal number (then add adjective ending)
| Number | Ordinal stem | With der (masc. Nom.) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | erst- (irregular!) | der erste |
| 2 | zweit- | der zweite |
| 3 | dritt- (irregular!) | der dritte |
| 4 | viert- | der vierte |
| 5 | fünft- | der fünfte |
| 6 | sechst- | der sechste |
| 7 | siebt- (irregular!) | der siebte |
| 8 | acht- | der achte |
| 9 | neunt- | der neunte |
| 10 | zehnt- | der zehnte |
| 11 | elft- | der elfte |
| 12 | zwölft- | der zwölfte |
| 19 | neunzehnt- | der neunzehnte |
20th onwards: add -st to the cardinal number
| Number | Ordinal | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | zwanzigst- | der zwanzigste |
| 21 | einundzwanzigst- | der einundzwanzigste |
| 30 | dreißigst- | der dreißigste |
| 100 | hundertst- | der hundertste |
Ordinals decline as adjectives
Ordinal numbers always take adjective endings (see Attributive Adjectives):
- der erste Platz — der (masc. Nom.) → -e
- am zweiten Januar — am = an dem (masc. Dat.) → -en
- das dritte Mal — das (neut. Nom.) → -e
Writing dates in German
German dates use ordinal numbers:
Format: (am) [day of week,] [ordinal number]. [month]
| Written | Spoken |
|---|---|
| 1. Mai | am ersten Mai |
| 3. Oktober | am dritten Oktober |
| 21. März | am einundzwanzigsten März |
Full date format: 30. März 2026 (spoken: am dreißigsten März zweitausendsechsundzwanzig)
Rankings and sequences
- Sie ist die Erste in der Klasse. (She is first in class.)
- Das ist mein zweites Mal in Berlin. (This is my second time in Berlin.)
- Er wurde Dritter beim Rennen. (He came third in the race.)
Real world: dates and birthdays
Ordinal numbers are essential for German dates: „Ich bin am dritten Mai geboren." „Das Konzert ist am einundzwanzigsten März." „Heute ist der erste Advent." — every birthday, appointment, and holiday announcement in German uses ordinal numbers in the dative with am.
Real world: rankings and competitions
Ordinals appear in sports results, class rankings, and competitions: „Er wurde Zweiter beim Marathon." „Sie ist die Beste in der Klasse." „Das ist mein drittes Mal in Wien." — leaderboards, race results, and award ceremonies in German-speaking countries all use these forms.
Real world: floors and levels in buildings
In shops, hotels, and lifts (elevators), ordinal numbers describe floors: „Der Aufzug fährt zum dritten Stock." „Die Rezeption ist im ersten Stock." „Schuhgeschäft: zweiter Stock." — note that the German Erdgeschoss (ground floor/EG) is floor 0, so erster Stock = 1st floor above ground.
German dates in writing use a number with a dot: 3. Oktober = the 3rd of October. When speaking, add the ordinal ending: am dritten Oktober. The three irregular ordinals to memorise are: erst- (1st), dritt- (3rd), siebt- (7th).
