Real world: calling in sick at school or work

In Germany you call in sick with standard phrases: „Mein Kind ist krank und kann heute nicht in die Schule kommen." „Ich fühle mich nicht gut — ich gehe zum Arzt." „Seit gestern habe ich Fieber." — knowing how to explain illness clearly is essential for navigating school and work in a German-speaking country.

Real world: at the pharmacy (in der Apotheke)

German pharmacies are the first stop for minor ailments: „Ich brauche etwas gegen Kopfschmerzen." „Haben Sie etwas gegen Schnupfen?" „Ich habe einen Husten seit drei Tagen." — pharmacists ask „Was fehlt Ihnen?" and you describe your symptoms using exactly these words.

Tip

The pattern Ich habe [body part]-schmerzen covers most pains: Kopfschmerzen (headache), Rückenschmerzen (back ache), Bauchschmerzen (stomach ache). For general pain or a single injury, use: Mein [body part] tut weh.
