Das Apostroph — Kurzformen und Besitz

Das Apostroph hat im Englischen zwei Hauptverwendungen. Es zeigt an, wo Buchstaben in Kurzformen fehlen (it's, don't) und es zeigt Eigentum oder Besitz an (the dog's lead, the students' books).

Zwei Verwendungen des Apostrophs

1. Kurzformen

Eine Kurzform entsteht, wenn zwei Wörter zusammengezogen werden und einige Buchstaben durch ein Apostroph ersetzt werden.

Vollständige FormKurzform
I amI'm
you areyou're
he is / he hashe's
do notdon't
cannotcan't
they willthey'll
it is / it hasit's

She isn't coming today. (is not → isn't, Apostroph ersetzt das o)

2. Besitz (Possessives Apostroph)

the children's playground, the men's changing room

Warnung

its vs it's

  • it's = it is / it has (Kurzform): It's raining.
  • its = gehört ihm/ihr (Besitz, kein Apostroph): The cat licked its paw.

Kein Apostroph für Pluralformen

Füge bei der Bildung des Plurals KEIN Apostroph hinzu:

✗ Three cat's sat on the wall. ✓ Three cats sat on the wall.

Praxisbezug: Aushang und Ladenschilder

Don't park here — it's a no-parking zone. Today's special: chef's soup and children's mini pizza. We've got great deals!

Praxisbezug: Informeller Brief / E-Mail

I'm really glad you're coming to the party. It's going to be great! We've invited all of Tom's friends. Don't forget to bring your ID — James's house has a security gate.

Tipp Apostrophe sind überall im Englischen: auf Ladenschildern ("today's offers"), in Nachrichten ("I'm on my way, can't talk"), in informellen Briefen ("we've been here before") und in Schlagzeilen ("children's hospital reopens"). Die zwei Regeln sind: Kurzformen (fehlende Buchstaben) und Besitz ('s oder '). Verwende niemals ein Apostroph, nur um einen Plural zu bilden.

Übungsaufgaben

Schreibe die Kurzform: 'They are going to the park.'

Antwort anzeigen
They're going to the park. (they are → they're)

Füge ein Apostroph hinzu: 'The boys football was on the roof.' (ein Junge)

Antwort anzeigen
The boy's football was on the roof. (Singular-Besitz → boy's)

Wähle: 'The dog wagged (its / it's) tail.'

Antwort anzeigen
'its' — das ist Besitz (gehört dem Hund). Kein Apostroph nötig. 'it's' = 'it is'.
