The Sphere

A sphere is a perfectly round 3D solid — every point on its surface is the same distance from the centre.

Volume of a Sphere

V=43πr3V = \frac{4}{3} \pi r^3

Surface Area of a Sphere

SA=4πr2SA = 4 \pi r^2

Sphere with radius 6 cm

Volume: V=43×π×216=288π≈904.8 cm3V = \dfrac{4}{3} \times \pi \times 216 = 288\pi \approx 904.8 \text{ cm}^3

Surface area: SA=4×π×36=144π≈452.4 cm2SA = 4 \times \pi \times 36 = 144\pi \approx 452.4 \text{ cm}^2

Real-World Applications

Real world: football manufacturing

A standard football has a circumference of about 69 cm, so its radius is r=69/(2π)≈11.0r = 69 / (2\pi) \approx 11.0 cm.

Volume: V=43×π×113=43×π×1,331≈5,575 cm3V = \dfrac{4}{3} \times \pi \times 11^3 = \dfrac{4}{3} \times \pi \times 1{,}331 \approx 5{,}575 \text{ cm}^3

Manufacturers use this to check that the correct amount of air is inside and to calculate rubber and leather usage.

Real world: spherical gas storage tank

A spherical LPG storage tank has radius 4 m. Its storage volume:

V=43×π×64≈268 m3V = \dfrac{4}{3} \times \pi \times 64 \approx 268 \text{ m}^3

That is equivalent to 268,000 litres — engineers use this figure for refill scheduling and safety calculations.

Real world: sprinkler system coverage

A garden sprinkler sprays water in a hemisphere (half-sphere) with radius 3 m. The volume of the spray zone:

Vhemisphere=12×43π×27=18π≈56.5 m3V_{\text{hemisphere}} = \dfrac{1}{2} \times \dfrac{4}{3}\pi \times 27 = 18\pi \approx 56.5 \text{ m}^3

Irrigation designers calculate this to ensure complete lawn coverage without gaps or overlap.

Tip

Hemisphere: a half-sphere has volume V=23πr3V = \dfrac{2}{3}\pi r^3 and surface area (curved part only) SA=2πr2SA = 2\pi r^2. Satellite dishes, domes, and bowls are all approximately hemispherical.

Practice Problems

A sphere has radius 3 cm. Find its volume and surface area.

Show answer
V = (4/3)π(27) = 36π ≈ 113.1 cm³. SA = 4π(9) = 36π ≈ 113.1 cm².
