Rectangle

A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles. It has two pairs of equal parallel sides.

Rectangle with sides a and b
Rectangle with sides a and b

Area of a Rectangle

A=a⋅bA = a \cdot b

Area is the product of length and width.

Perimeter of a Rectangle

P=2(a+b)P = 2(a + b)

Perimeter is the total length of all four sides.

Find the area and perimeter of a 6 cm × 4 cm rectangle

A=6×4=24 cm2A = 6 \times 4 = 24 \text{ cm}^2

P=2(6+4)=2×10=20 cmP = 2(6 + 4) = 2 \times 10 = 20 \text{ cm}

Real world: planning a garden bed

A gardener wants to lay turf in a rectangular garden bed that is 5 m long and 3 m wide.

Area of turf needed: A=5×3=15 m2A = 5 \times 3 = 15 \text{ m}^2

Fencing needed around the edge: P=2(5+3)=16 mP = 2(5 + 3) = 16 \text{ m}

Knowing the area tells you how much turf to order; the perimeter tells you how much edging strip to buy.

Real world: football pitch

A standard football pitch is 105 m long and 68 m wide.

A=105×68=7140 m2A = 105 \times 68 = 7140 \text{ m}^2

P=2(105+68)=346 mP = 2(105 + 68) = 346 \text{ m}

Groundstaff use the area to calculate how much grass seed or fertiliser the pitch needs each season. The perimeter determines how much boundary rope or advertising hoarding is required around the edge.

Real world: cutting a window pane

A glazier needs to cut a rectangular pane 1.2 m wide and 0.9 m tall.

A=1.2×0.9=1.08 m2A = 1.2 \times 0.9 = 1.08 \text{ m}^2

Glass is sold by the square metre. Knowing the exact area lets the glazier quote the correct price and ensures they order just enough material without waste.

Tip

Where do we see rectangles? Room floors, football pitches, phone and tablet screens, window panes, picture frames, parking spaces, swimming pools from above, and most everyday pieces of paper are all rectangles.

Practice Problems

A rectangle has length 8 m and width 3 m. Find its area and perimeter.

Show answer
A = 24 m², P = 2(8+3) = 22 m

A rectangular bedroom floor is 4.5 m long and 3.2 m wide. How many square metres of carpet are needed?

Show answer
A = 4.5 × 3.2 = 14.4 m²
