What is a Parallelogram?

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. Opposite sides are equal in length.

abh
SymbolMeaning
bbbase (any side)
hhperpendicular height
aaslant side

Area of a Parallelogram

A=b⋅hA = b \cdot h

Base times perpendicular height. Note: h is the vertical height, not the slant side.

Perimeter of a Parallelogram

P=2(a+b)P = 2(a + b)

Twice the sum of adjacent sides, since opposite sides are equal.

Find the area and perimeter: base 8 cm, height 5 cm, slant side 6 cm

Area: A=8×5=40 cm2A = 8 \times 5 = 40 \text{ cm}^2

Perimeter: P=2(6+8)=2×14=28 cmP = 2(6 + 8) = 2 \times 14 = 28 \text{ cm}

Warning

The height hh is always perpendicular to the base — it is not the slant side. If you are given the slant side, you cannot use it directly as the height.

Real world: estimating paint for a sloped wall panel

A decorative wall panel has a parallelogram shape with a base of 2.4 m, a perpendicular height of 1.5 m, and slant sides of 1.8 m.

Area to be painted: A=2.4×1.5=3.6 m2A = 2.4 \times 1.5 = 3.6 \text{ m}^2

If one litre of paint covers 4 m², you need 3.6÷4=0.93.6 \div 4 = 0.9 litres — so one 1-litre tin is enough.

Real world: solar panels on a sloped roof

A rectangular array of solar panels is mounted on a sloped roof. Viewed from the side, the shape appears as a parallelogram with a base of 3.2 m and a perpendicular height of 1.6 m.

A=3.2×1.6=5.12 m2A = 3.2 \times 1.6 = 5.12 \text{ m}^2

Solar installers use this to estimate energy output — typical panels generate around 150–200 W per m² under standard conditions, so this array could deliver roughly 770–1020 W.

Real world: parallelogram-shaped paving slabs

A path is laid using diamond-cut parallelogram slabs, each with a base of 0.6 m and a perpendicular height of 0.4 m.

Area per slab: A=0.6×0.4=0.24 m2A = 0.6 \times 0.4 = 0.24 \text{ m}^2

To cover a path of 7.2 m27.2 \text{ m}^2, the number of slabs needed =7.2÷0.24=30= 7.2 \div 0.24 = 30 slabs.

Tip

Where do we see parallelograms? Decorative floor and wall tiles, the face of a ramp when viewed from the side, certain road signs, the sides of a matchbox tilted at an angle, and patterned brickwork in architecture.

Practice Problems

A parallelogram has base 10 cm, height 4 cm, and slant side 5 cm. Find the area and perimeter.

Show answer
Area = 10 × 4 = 40 cm². Perimeter = 2(5 + 10) = 30 cm.

A parallelogram has area 36 cm² and base 9 cm. What is the height?

Show answer
h = A ÷ b = 36 ÷ 9 = 4 cm.
