What is the Zero Article?
The zero article (∅) means using no article before a noun. It is not a mistake — it is a grammatical choice with specific rules.
Main Uses of the Zero Article
1. General statements with plural / uncountable nouns
When speaking about something in general (not a specific item), use no article.
∅ Dogs are loyal animals. (all dogs in general) ∅ Water is essential for life. (water as a substance, not specific water)
Compare: The dogs next door bark all night. (specific dogs → use the)
2. Proper nouns — names of people, most countries, cities
∅ London is the capital of ∅ England. ∅ Maria won the competition.
Exception: Use the with countries that include a common noun: the United States, the Netherlands, the Philippines.
3. Languages, academic subjects
She studies ∅ French. I love ∅ mathematics.
4. Meals, sports, games
We had ∅ lunch at noon. They play ∅ basketball every Saturday.
5. Means of transport (by + noun)
She travels by ∅ bus. He went by ∅ train.
Ask yourself: Am I talking about the thing in general, or one specific thing? General = no article (or a); specific = the.
